Eugenia Mardell LeGrande, 98, of Winterset, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at Winterset Care Center South in Winterset. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 19, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Pastor Jeff Binns officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Eugenia was born on June 27, 1918, in Adair County, IA (near Orient) to Jay C. and Susie Frances (Smith) LeGrande. The family moved to rural Winterset in 1929. She attended the Yale country school (Ord neighborhood) for 1 year, then to Macksburg and the Macksburg Consolidated Schools where she graduated in 1936. After attending Simpson College, Eugenia taught rural schools (Snodgradd, Kasson, Monroe Township) until teaching at Grant School for 5 years. She then taught Fourth Grade for the Winterset School District from 1951 until her retirement in 1984. Eugenia then took care of her mother and did work around her home. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, member of the Macksburg and WHS Alumni Associations, a local Birthday Club, and enjoyed flowers and nature.
Eugenia is survived by many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Frances.
Friends may call 1 hour before service time on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset Community Educational Foundation.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
