Gailen Palmer passed away from cancer on June 24, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice.

Memorial services will be held at Staves United Methodist Church, located at 2747 East Madison Avenue in Des Moines. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, June 29 from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 30 at 1:00pm with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Gailen was born August 6, 1936 in Madison County, Iowa to Clarence and Beatrice Palmer. Gailen worked and retired from HyVee on E. Euclid in Des Moines.

He enjoyed spending his time camping and going to the races at Knoxville Raceway, playing cribbage at Am. Vets, having coffee at the Coffee Club on Tuesday mornings, and going to casinos.

Surviving him is his wife of sixty-one years, Sherry Palmer, sons: David (Theresa) Palmer, Steven Palmer, grandchildren: Chantel (Brandon) Wimmer, D.J. Palmer, Christina Palmer, great granddaughter, Kennedy Wimmer, brother, Ronald (Vickie) Palmer, sisters-in-law: Pat Palmer, and Linda Jones. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by sisters: Ida (Bill) Allen, Lela (Carl) Bindel; brother, Dale Palmer, and parents.

The family would like to give thanks to the caring staff at Taylor House Hospice for the incredible care Gailen received. The family would also like to thank Dr. Danielson, Dr. Westburg, Dr. Nordstrom, and Dr. Lachenmaier.

Memorials can be made to Staves Methodist Church, Roman Dean Augustus Palmer, Taylor House volunteers, or St. Jude Children's
Hospital.
