Passed Away at Home of Her Daughter in Rippey Last Week Saturday
Rippey, June 4:—Grandma McDowell passed away last Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Smith. Her health has been in poor condition the past few years.
Elizabeth Smith was born January 23, 1822 and died June 1, 1907, at the age of eighty-five years, five months and eight days. She was born in North Carolina and in childhood days moved to Brown county, Indiana, and was there married to Otha Wolf in 1843. To this union nine children were born, six of which survive her. In 1852 they moved to Madison county, Iowa. In 1853 the home was saddened by the death of the husband and father. In 1872 she was married to Muckelroy McDowell, and moved to Rippey in 1876 and was again left a widow in 1887.
She has been a member of the M. E. church since fourteen years of age, .and was a faithful worker in the church until her declining years.
Five children were able to attend the funeral: Mrs. Asa Turpin, of Biglon, Mo., Mrs. Will Cummings, of Winterset, Iowa, Mr. George Wolf, of Rippey, Mr. Joe Wolf, of Panora, Mrs. Smith, of Rippey. Another son in Arizona was unable to come.
The funeral was held at the M. E. church. Interment was in Rippey cemetery.
_____________________Transcriber's note: Transcribed as published. The first husband, Otho, was alive and well in the 1856 and 1860 censuses so his year of death is likely to be 1863 rather than the published 1853.
