Gary H. McClimen, Urbandale

Gary H. McClimen, 72, of Urbandale, Iowa, died of pancreatic cancer on Monday, May 2, 2016, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston. Visitation will be Sunday, May 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa 50266. A funeral service will be held at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2900 49th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50310 on Monday, May 9 at 11:00 a.m.

Gary, the son of Harold and Anna Mae McClimen, was born in Newton, Iowa, July 25, 1943. He graduated from Newton High School in 1961 and from Central College in Pella, Iowa, in 1965 with degrees in business administration and economics and a minor in math. He was married to Nancy McDonald in St. Charles, Iowa, August 14, 1965.

Gary began his career at Iowa-Des Moines National Bank, which later became Norwest Bank and Wells Fargo, in June 1965 as a programming trainee in the data processing department. During his 27-plus years at the bank, he was elected systems officer for data processing systems and services, senior systems officer, vice president and manager of computer sales and services, vice president of data processing, and vice president and senior manager of payment services. He continued his career as a technology marketing consultant for Data Business Equipment in Urbandale, Iowa, retiring in 2012.

Gary had been an active member of Data Processing Management Association, Association for Systems Management, and Young Men's Breakfast Club. He was a lifetime member of Sertoma International, serving as president of the Des Moines chapter, and he was a member of the Des Moines Golden K Kiwanis Club. He served as a director of the Greater Des Moines Bowling Association and chaired the state men's bowling tournament held in Des Moines March-May 1982. He joined the board of Visiting Nurse Services (VNS) in 1982 and again in 2007 and served as board chair four times. He was a dedicated volunteer at his children's schools, at Des Moines Community Playhouse, and at Immanuel United Methodist Church, where he chaired numerous committees, including Finance, Foundation, and SPRC.

Gary became a member of the Newton High School varsity baseball team as a freshman and played every inning of every game for the next four years. He earned varsity letters in baseball, football, basketball, and tennis and was named to the all-conference baseball team two years. He later played on three semipro baseball teams, Kellogg Cardinals, Ames Merchants, and Des Moines Merchants. At Central College, he earned four letters in baseball and four in football and was twice named to the all-conference baseball first team. He was inducted into the Newton High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Kenneth McDonald; son-in-law, Dan Miltner; and brother-in-law Mike McDonald. He is survived by his wife of 50-plus years, Nancy McClimen; three daughters, Kerri McClimen of Chicago and Kristin McClimen Bell and Betsy McClimen (Rachel Gulick) of Des Moines; and five grandchildren, Aidan and Vivian Miltner of Chicago and Kenna, Frankie, and Charlie Bell of Des Moines. He is also survived by his mother-in law, Wilmarie McDonald of St. Charles, Iowa; brothers-in-law Galen (Kris) McDonald of Owatonna, Minnesota, and John (Susie) McDonald of St. Charles, Iowa; and sister-in-law Leilani McDonald of Iowa Falls, Iowa, along with nieces and nephews and many dear aunts, uncles, and cousins.
