Page 2, Column 3VAL BROOKS DIES AT SPIRIT LAKE
Val Brooks of Okoboji, a former resident of Winterset, died Monday, Aug. 17 in a hospital at Spirit Lake, as result of a heart ailment. He was 66 years of age.
As a young man Mr. Brooks came to Winterset, about 1924, to work as a teller in the old Winterset Savings bank. He lived here for several years before moving to Audubon. He later went to Okoboji, where in association with his father, the late Melford Brooks, he developed the Brooks Beach resort and Elm-Brooks County club.
Surviving are his wife; and a son, John Brooks of Okoboji and a sister in California.
Funeral services were held Thursday from Spirit Lake Methodist church, with burial in the Okoboji cemetery at Arnold's park.
