The sudden death of C. C. Schwaner on last Thursday evening came as a shock to the community. While he had heart trouble for the past year, he was at his place of business regularly and few outside his own family knew the real condition of his health. On the evening of his death he attended a party at the home of A. W. Crawford. He left about 11 o'clock and upon reaching home, sat down to talk over the events of the evening with his wife. While engaged in conversation he was stricken heart failure and died almost instantly.

C.C. Schwaner was one of the pioneer businessmen of Winterset, having been engaged in the manufacture and sale of harnesses since 1867. While conservative in the management of his own affairs he was identified with every progressive movement during the period of Winterset's growth within the past 37 years. He was more than ordinarily successful in business and leaves a valuable estate the product of years of diligent application to business.

His death is a distinct loss to the community and a sore bereavement to his friends and loved ones.

Funeral services were held from the late residence on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, R. B. Marquis of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. B. E. S. Ely of Des Moines, a former pastor. At the conclusion of the services at the residence, the funeral procession was lead by the Masonic fraternity and Knight templars in uniform and under the beautiful ritual services of the Masonic order, the remains of a beloved brother were consigned to the last resting place.

Death of C. C. Schwaner

The sudden death of C. C. Schwaner which occurred last Thursday night was such a shock to this community as it has not received for some time. Mr. Schwaner had returned home from an evening function for gentlemen and while sitting in his chair telling his wife of the enjoyable occasion, without any warning or exclamation beyond a gasp, threw his head back and expired. Heart failure, from which he had been troubled for several years was the cause. It is supposed the long walk home had induced it as he complained several times of shortness of breath to other gentlemen with whom he walked.

Mr. Schwaner was one of the oldest and most successful businessmen of Winterset. He was born in Prussia in 1848 and came to America in 1853. He first settled in Keokuk but afterwards went to St. Louis where he learned his trade, that of harness maker. He moved to this place in 1869 where he has lived ever since. In 1871 he was married to Miss Kate Schowalter, who was born in Lee county this state; to them were born four children, John E., William F., Rolla A. and Katherine, the daughter of eight years, all of whom with the mother survive him.

Mr. Schwaner was a man of eminent business ability and he possessed great inventive genius, as he was the inventor of a number of valuable patents in the line of his vocation, several of which he manufactured here under the name of The Peerless Manufacturing Co. He was a man of large influence in the community, he possessed the confidence and esteem of the people; was public spirited, morally right and honest in all his dealing. He will be missed among the businessmen and mourned by all his acquaintances. The bereaved family have the deepest sympathy of the community in this their sad loss.

Mr. Schwaner had been continuously in business longer than any other now doing business in Winterset.

The funeral took place at the home on west Court avenue Tuesday afternoon, and was conducted by the Masonic Order, of which he was a member. A number of Knight Templars from Des Moines came in a special car to attend the funeral. A large concourse of people gathered to pay the last sad rites to the departed.
