Rodney Wayne Culbertson was born in Indianola, IA May 18, 1949.

Rod was raised on a farm in Lacona where he attended Lacona grade school. The family moved to Martensdale the Spring of 1959 where he attended Martensdale St. Mary’s School and graduated in 1967. He graduated college from Area 11, now known as DMACC in 1969. Rodney worked for many different companies during his lifetime including Massey Ferguson, Target, and ArtCraft where he retired in 2011. He was currently working part-time at Walmart in the dairy department.

Rodney had many hobbies that included reading, listening to music, photography and the great outdoors. Fishing was one of his favorite hobbies, as he had many stories to tell from his fishing trips. Rodney was known as our Mountain Dew man of the family as he would always be drinking a can of Mountain Dew. He treasured his landscaping projects and flower gardens. He took great pride in taking care of them all summer long and making sure they were beautiful. Most evenings one would find Rodney sitting outside on his patio next to the fountain pond that he built watching the goldfish swimming around and the hummingbirds flying around his feeders. A gift of Rodney’s was his handyman ability to fix nearly everything which was truly a gift passed down from his father. Every summer one would find Rodney at the National Balloon Festivals in Indianola. He enjoyed taking many pictures of the hot air balloons. Another of his talents that he enjoyed was working with the pictures he had taken. On the computer, he could turn pictures into beautiful picture collages. Rod was a very quiet private man where he kept to himself a lot but on occasion if there was only a couple people present, he became quite talkative. Rod had a unique sense of humor. We never knew what kind of funny comment might come out of his mouth. He had a great memory for telling stories of his childhood and the stories of family history. He took great ownership in having the knowledge of our family history and being able to tell stories to all of us.

Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Clyne Culbertson and Almeda Grace (Young) Culbertson; brother, Dennis Lee Culbertson; daughter, Joan Marie Culbertson; brother-in-law, Larry Wortman; grandparents, Forrest and Dolly Culbertson, Allen and Minnie Young; and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his sisters, Sandy (Duane) Isley of Indianola, Barb Culbertson of Fort Calhoun, NE, Bev Kubik of Martensdale; step-daughter, Julie (Mark) Jimmerson of Van Meter; step-son, Mike Goergen of Des Moines; grandchildren, Makaela, Kierra and Brayden Jimmerson, Kristina (John) Montano, Nicholas and Ashley Goergen; nieces, Wendy (Nicholas) McClimmon and Brittney Kubik; nephews, Shane (Cara) Isley and Lucas(Danielle) Kubik; and 4 great nieces and nephews.
