Robert Le Roy Ross, son of William A. and Caroline McMillen Ross, was born in Penn township, Madison county, Iowa on April 13, 1885. He attended the nearby country school and the Earlham high school and Academy.

He learned the printing trade at Earlham, and followed this profession for over fifty years.

On March 5, 1904 Mr. Ross was united in marriage with Mabel L. Flaugh, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Flaugh, pioneer residents of Dexter.

In the early part of 1905 Mr. Ross and his brother, the late Albert L. Ross became the owners of “The Dexter Sentinel”, of which they published until May of 1911. In the ensuing years Mr. Ross was the owner of papers at Grand Junction, Dysart and Pomeroy, Iowa. He was ably assisted by his wife in the operations of these newspapers. He continued publication of “The Pomeroy Herald” from January, 1938 until January, 1950, when due to failing health it became necessary for him to dispose of his business.

On September 1, 1956, Mr. Ross and his wife returned to Dexter to make their home. During the past year and a half his health continued to fail. On Tuesday, January 8, 1957, Mr. Ross passed away at his home after suffering a coronary occlusion.

He is survived by his widow and four children: Miss Maurine Ross of Des Moines; Mrs. C. H. Ingram of Tucson, Arizona; Dr. Robert L. Ross, Jr. of Grass Valley, California, and Keith A. Ross of Arlington, Virginia. He is also survived by one brother, William G. Ross of Gilroy, California, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mr. and Mrs. Ross were privileged to observe their Golden Wedding anniversary on March 5, 1954. All of their children were present.

Mr. Ross was brought up in a strict Quaker home and was always interested in the churches of the towns where he lived. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias at Dysart, Iowa, and the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges at Pomeroy.

Services were from the Evan’s Funeral Home of Dexter Saturday, January 12th, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Paul F. Textor in charge. Mr. John Daley of Stuart conducted the Masonic service. Interment was at the Dexter cemetery.
