John Thompson, Missouri

John Thompson, 81, of Bolivar, Mo., died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at the Mt. Vernon Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo.

A celebration of life service was held Monday, Nov. 9, at Bolivar United Methodist Church, under the direction of Walnut Lawn Funeral Home in Springfield, Mo. Interment was Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the John C. Thompson Memorial Fund for the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.

John Carlos Thompson was born March 26, 1934, in Macksburg, Iowa, the son of Mary and Jay Thompson. John attended the Macksburg Public Schools, where he graduated high school. Following two years of U.S. Army service in Germany, John began a 32-year career with Bell Telephone, serving cities in Iowa, New Jersey and Nebraska. John married Bette Young in 1955.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Mary Thompson; a sister, Evelyn; and a brother, Sam.

He is survived by his wife, Bette Ann Thompson; children, Melanie (Ron) West, Scott (Rosaria) Thompson and Michael (Deborah) Thompson; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Phyllis Kirkland; and several other family members and friends.
