Annie McCaughan Shaffer Taught In Old Stone School House. Daughter of Dr. McCaughan
Mrs. Annie McCaughan Shaffer, of Kansas City, a sister-in-law, of Mrs. Mary Hutchings, died in Kansas City Sunday. The funeral was held at Great Bend, Kansas, Wednesday.
Mrs. Shaffer, who was about seventy years old, was one of the first teachers in Winterset's old stone school house, teaching one of the lower grades. She was a daughter of Rev C. T. McCaughan whose home was on the lots where F. L. Drennan's house now stands.
Mrs. Shaffer was first married to Rufus Bell, a brother of Mrs. Hutchings and Mrs. Martha Tidrick. Several years after Mr. Bell's death she was married to Mr. Shaffer and made her home for many years in Kansas City.
_____________________Transcriber's note: In censuses, she went by Anna & Mary S. The spelling of the "Shafer" surname was uniformly with a single "f" in all censuses and her Missouri Death Certificate.
