Dick Dean Smith, Winterset - Formerly of Humeston
March 9, 1933 - June 6, 2015

Dick Smith died at his home in Winterset at the Madison Square Assisted Living on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was 82.

A visitation with family present will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 11 at the Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 12 at the Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Dick Dean Smith, the son of George Dewey and Orpha Iscel (Powell) Smith, was born March 9, 1933 in Humeston. He grew up on a farm near Humeston and graduated from Humeston High School in 1952. On Christmas Day 1952 he married the love of his life, Jessie Mae Gladfelder at the Lineville Methodist Church in Lineville. The couple moved to California where Dick attended the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo where he studied land surveying.

Dick was a member of the Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston and was enlisted in the National Guard for eight years. During his working career he was a land surveyor working for the Soil Conservation, the Corp of Engineers and Oaks Engineering in Des Moines where he retired from in 1995.

Dick loved reading, watching westerns, gardening and birds. All this said he loved nothing more than time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 62 plus years, Jessie Mae Smith of Winterset; children, Allan (Melody) Smith of Prairie City; Kathy Townsell of Des Moines; Marcia (Tony) Smith of Winterset; Jeffrey Smith of Winterset; James Smith of Clarinda; Kurt (Pam) Smith of Indiana; Michael (Molly) Smith of Prairie City and Sara Preston of Indianola. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren (Danielle (Gary) Ingram, Amanda Smith, Shannon (Scott) Riedl, Robert Kain, Renee Kain, Joe (Spring) Potter, Nathan Potter, Brittany Potter, Jake Smith, Christina Burton, Caitlin Pidgeon, Holly Pidgeon, Miranda Smith, Jeffrey Smith, Erin (Brad) Gilber, Sam (Corey) Titus, Presha Smith, Libertie Smith, Josie Walker, Kaitlyn, Emma and Abigail Preston), 15 great grandchildren (Jerrica Smith, Garrette Boone, Haylie, Madison and Matthew Riedl, Destiny, Benjamin and Lacimae Fissus, Miranda, Payton and Logan Potter, Cloe, Carle and Maddy Burton and Lucas Gilber), a sister-in-law, Maxine Smith of Davenport, extended family and a host of friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Clifton Townsell, a daughter-in-law, De Ann Smith, a grandson, Kile Kain; a brother, Lee Smith and a sister, Betty (Jack) Perkins.
