MRS. LOU GRAY DIED ON SUNDAY

Pioneer Woman Spent Early Life in Log Cabin Near Peru

Mrs. Charles E. Gray, one of the early settlers of Madison county, died Sunday, Sept. 5 at her farm home near St. Charles where she had lived for almost 50 years. She was 86 years of age.

Mrs. Gray was the former Harriet Louise Rhyno, daughter of James A. and Harriet Toneray Rhyno. She was born in Des Moines April 12, 1862. At the time of her birth, Des Moines was but a small village, with not a business house on Walnut street.

Her mother died when she was an infant, and her childhood was spent with her grandmother in a log cabin on Clanton creek near where the town of Peru now stands.

As a young woman she taught in St. Charles and nearby schools.

She was married to Charles E. Gray, July 2, 1884. They moved to Pottawatamie county where Mr. Gray engaged in business for some time, but soon returned to Madison county to make their permanent home. Mr. Gray died in 1934, shortly after they had observed their Golden Wedding anniversary.

She is survived by seven children: Ernest R. Gray of Des Moines, Mrs. Lucretia G. Ray and Mrs. Harriet L. Smith of Winterset; Fred O. Gray of Golden, Colo.; Mrs. Edna Herzog of Melbourne, Burton Gray of Marshalltown, and Harry L. Gray of St. Charles. She also leaves two half sisters, Mrs. Nell Berry of Alexandria, Va. and Mercedes Rhyno of Washington, D. C. two grandsons and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Richards Funeral home in charge of the Rev. Walter Samp of Chariton, former pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
