Funeral services were held Friday at the Truro Methodist church for Robert E. Phillips, well known resident of Truro who died on Wednesday of last week. The services were conducted by Rev. W. W. Watson, assisted by Rev. Clarence Moore of Leon. Interment was in the Peru cemetery.

Robert Emerson Phillips, son of George W. and Mary Loy Phillips, was born in Muscatine county near West Liberty, Iowa, November 1, 1865, and passed away at his home in Truro, Sept. 16, 1942, age 76 years 10 months and 15 days.

He grew to manhood near his birthplace and was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Windus January 5, 1887, and to this union were born five children, Mrs. Fred Beeler, Peru; Mrs. B. M. Wetzel, Murray; Elmer, Truro; Edwin, Truro; and Mrs. Ada Lowe, New Mexico.

Soon after his marriage he and his wife united with the Christian church in West Liberty. On March 1, 1899 he and his family moved to a farm south of Truro where he made his home for many years. On Sept. 21, 1921 his wife Elizabeth passed away. On March 24, 1923, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Bradie J. Woolery who survives him. After his marriage he moved to Truro where he has since resided.

Bert, as he was always known, was very industrious and was never happier than when he was able to work. He was an obliging neighbor, an honored citizen, and was always ready and willing to help a friend in trouble. He served as mayor of Truro for several years. He attended Sunday school and church services until his health compelled him to give it up. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, also the Knights of Pythias lodge, and in his earlier years was quite active in both orders. Seven years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and he has never been well since tht time, suffering greatly at times but bore it all bravely. He has often spoken of the time when he would be released from pain and his suffering over.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow; the five children already named; two step-children, S. Kenneth Brown, Des Moines and Mrs. Lyla Lynch, St. Charles; 12 grandchildren; 8 great- grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Olive Davisson, West Liberty; one brother, Wm. Phillips, Lorimor, Ia., neices, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

R. E. Phillips, long-time resident of the Truro community, died at his home there Wednesday morning, Sept. 16th. Mr. Phillips who was 76 years of age, had been in poor health for several months.

Robert Emerson Phillips, son of George W. and Mary Loy Phillips, was born in Muscatine county, near West Liberty, Nov. 1, 1865. He grew to manhood there and was married to Miss Elizabeth Windus, Jan. 5, 1887. They were the parents of five children Mrs. Fred Beeler of Peru, Mrs. B. M. Witzel, of Murray, Elmer and Edwin Phillips of Truro, and Mrs. Ada Lowe of New Mexico.

On March 1, 1899, the Phillips family moved to a farm south of Truro, where he made his home for many years. On September 21, 1921, Mrs. Phillips died. On March 24, 1923 he was married to Mrs. Bradie J. Woolery, who survives him. That year they moved to Truro, where they have since resided. He served as mayor for several years, and was a member of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges.

Seven years ago he suffered a stork of paralysis, and he has been an invalid since that time.

He leaves his wife, the five children previously mentioned: two stepchildren, S. Kenneth Brown of Des Moines, and Mrs. Lyle Lynch of St. Charles, 12 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Olive Davison of West Liberty, one brother Wm. Phillips of Lorimor.

Funeral services for Mr. Phillips were held from the Methodist church in Truro last Friday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Ward Watson, and the Rev. Clarence Moore of Leon conducting them, and he was buried in the family lot in the Peru cemetery.

DEATH CLAIMS BERT PHILLIPS

Suffers Stoke In Truro Home Tuesday. Services Held Friday.

Bert Phillips, long-time resident and retired farmer of Madison county, died at his home in Truro last Tuesday evening, following a stroke suffered earlier in the day. He was 77 years of age.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church in Truro Friday with the Rev. Watson officiating, assisted by Rev. Moon of Leon. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.

Bert Phillips was born in 1865 near West Liberty, Iowa, in Muscatine county, the son of George W. and Mary Lee Phillips. He grew to manhood there and was united in marriage in January 1887 to Elizabeth Windus also of Muscatine county.

They were the parents of five children. In March 1899 they moved to Madison county, making their home on a farm near Truro. His wife preceded him in death in 1921 and he retired from farming in 1923 moving to Truro, where he resided until his death.

In early childhood he affiliated with the Church of Christ in West Liberty later transferring his membership to the Methodist church in Truro. He enjoyed good health until 1935, when he suffered a stroke and since has been in failing health.

He is survived by three daughters, Wilma Beeler of Peru; Ada Low of New Mexico, and Eva Wessle of Murray and two sons Edwin and Elmer Philips of Truro.
