Grandfather Houlette, one of the pioneers of Madison county passed away at the home of his son, W. P. Houlette, near Hanley on Sunday, June 27th in his 93rd year. Mr. Houlette was an old and respected citizen having come from Illinois in 1867. The aged wife and five sons and two daughters survive him. The funeral service was held at Hanly, Tuesday afternoon and he was laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery. Mr. Houlette has been a faithful member of the M. Obituary

James Dale Houlette was born in Murser County, Pennsylvania, on the 4th day of September 1816, and departed this life on the 27th day of June 1909, age 92 years, 9 months and 23 days.

He was united in marriage to Agnes S. Clark on the 29th day of January 1844, to this union were born seven children Margret Slinker, of Payett, Idaho; Robert S. Houlette, of Friona, Texas, C. Houlette, of Truro, Iowa; L. S. Houlette, of Kansas City, Mo.; W. P. Houlette, of St. Charles, Ia.; Stephen Houlette, of Des Moines, Ia., and Susen E. Schwek, of Des Moines, Ia. He leaves a wife and the above named children who are all living, to mourn his loss.

In the year 1845 he moved from the state of Pennsylvania to Ohio, then in the year 1847 he with his wife moved to Marnard County, Illinois, there they lived and reared their family and in September 1867 he moved to Madison County, Iowa, and has lived in this county until his death. He united with the Methodist church in 1850 and lived a consistent member until death. He was a kind father and husband, and was loved by all.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the Hanley church conducted by Rev. Williams. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
