June 1896James D. Hartman, whose death was mentioned last week, was born in Roanoke county, Virginia Feb. 26th, 1818. At the age of twenty he moved to Putman county, Indiana at the age of twenty-two he married Anna Stutz, to them were born eight children, four of whom lived to full man and woman hood. Two died in infancy. He moved to Madison Co. in 1855 where he lived an honest upright man until the 17th day of June 1896 when the master called him from his labors here below.

James D. Hartman died Monday night, June 15, at his home in Truro. He was stricken with paralysis some time ago and continued in poor health until his departure from earth. He was born eighty years ago in Old Virginia and came to Iowa in the days of the early pioneer.
His wife and five children, four of whom are married, survive him. The unmarried daughter, a charming young lady, lives with her mother, who is past 70 years old.
The funeral June 17th was largely attended and the remains were buried in Hartman cemetery.
