Matilda Ann Garrett was born in Madison county, Virginia, on the 3rd of May, 1830. In 1836 she moved with her parents to Highland county, Ohio. On the 8th of January, 1845, she was united in marriage to Walter B. Garrett, of Fayette county, Ohio, and in 1865 they came to Madison county, Iowa.

Until very recently the family resided in Walnut township in the extreme southern part of the county, after which they moved to the present homestead just east of Winterset. Mrs. Garrett was the mother of thirteen children. Eleven of these children survive her - eight sons and three daughters. Ten of these children were present at her funeral; one son found it impossible to come.

Sister Garrett passed on to the glory world on Saturday morning of June 20th. She had always been a strong, healthy, hardworking, energetic woman. Her illness was brief and the struggle with death soon over.

Sister Garrett was converted while quite young, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she remained a member all her life, until she was called to fellowship of the church triumphant, which is without fault before the throne of God.

The life of the departed was one of toil and deepest anxiety for her eight sons and three daughters. As one by one they came to man and womanhood and started out to make their own way in the busy world, her anxiety for them never grew less. Her deepest concern for them was that her boys grow manly and honest, and that christian integrity should be the crowning virtue of her girls. She was graciously spared to see all her children grown to man and womanhood ere she went to the bright home on high.

The funeral was held at the home, one mile east of Winterset on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and was attended by a very large company of relatives and friends. Sermon by the writer from the text, "I have finished my course, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown," 2 Tim. 4:7-8...........

Death’s Decree.

Died, at her home, one and one-half miles east of Winterset, Saturday, June 20th, Mrs. W. B. Garrett.

The sickness of deceased was of short duration, although she had suffered ill health by times ever since early last spring. Tuesday preceding her death she first complained seriously, but it was not thought the end was so near. Early Saturday morning she was heard by the family moaning, and when they reached her she was sitting on a chair near her bedside stone dead. It was a sudden stroke and came quite unexpectedly. Mrs. Garrett was a very highly respected lady, 66 years old, the mother of eight sons and three daughter, all of whom survive her.

The family are old residents of Madison county, having moved here from Ohio in 1865. Most of the children reside in this locality. Those who are here from a distance are: Thomas Garrett and wife, of Boone; Mrs. Clara Burghardt, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Angie Fishback, of Marysville, Mo.; C. W. Garrett and Mrs. Abernathy, of Great Falls, Montana. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Stire at the residence yesterday at 3 o’clock.

DEATH’S SUDDEN SUMMONS.

Mrs. W. B. Garrett died very suddenly at four o’clock last Saturday morning, June 20th, at her home a mile and a half east of town. Mrs. Garrett had had a serious attack of the grip last spring, and was then thought to be dangerously ill, but seemed to recover from the attack. Last Tuesday she complained of not feeling well, but no one thought her condition serious. Saturday morning about four o’clock she arose and sat in a chair near her bed. Some one of the family heard her moaning and hastened to her, but found on reaching her that the spirit had already left the body.

Mrs. Garrett was 66 years of age, and had lived in this county since 1865, when she came here from Fayette county, Ohio. Her husband and eleven children (eight sons and three daughters) survive to mourn her loss. Most of them reside in this vicinity.

Of those from a distance, Thomas Garrett and wife, of Boone; Mrs. Clara Burghardt, of Wisconsin; and Mrs. Angie Fishback, a sister-in-law, of Maryville, Mo., have arrived to attend the funeral. C. W. Garrett and Mrs. Abernathy of Great Falls, Montana are expected today.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 3 o’clock at the home. The interment will be in the Winterset cemetery. The pall bearers will be composed of Mrs. Garrett’s sons, seven of whom will be present.

Mrs. W. B. Garrett died at her home Saturday morning at 5 o’clock while sitting in a chair. Death came instantly.

Mrs. Garrett had been ill since February when she was dangerously sick with the grippe.ely she has been able to do her house work, but on Tuesday she was again taken sick. Friday night Mrs. Eli Moorman, her daughter, was with her most of the night, but toward morning Mrs. Garrett said she was much better, and requested her daughter to lie down. An hour afterward Mr. Garrett heard his wife moaning and discovered her sitting in a chair, but before he could reach her she was dead, though he did not realize the fact until son-in-law, Mr. Moorman, told him.

The funeral occurred Wednesday afternoon, Rev. P. C. Stire preaching the funeral sermon at the residence a mile east of the city, and was very largely attended.
