BAYLIS E. LAKE

On Wednesday, at 41/2 o’clock P. M., June 10th 1874, Baylis E. Lake died of some form of Erysipelas, having been sick only six days. The suddenness of the death of so rugged a man who bid fair for long life, gives a solemn warning even to the strongest. “Be ye also ready for ye know not the day nor the hours.” He was buried on Friday, the 12th, at Union Chapel near M. C. Debord’s. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Butler Bird. They were very solemn and impressive.

Probably no greater number ever met at that place to show their respect for the dead and sympathy for the living, and the tears that followed from the scores of persons evinced the depth of that feeling. Citizens, neighbors, and comrades, Baylis is no more of this earth; he is gone. On the battlefield he was brave, in the camp as on the march he was generous even to the dividing of his last “hard tack” with a hungry soldier. As a neighbor he was loved and respected by all. As a father and companion he was affectionate and true, full of those noble impulses which can only flow from one possessed of so large a heart. Thus has passed away one of our most esteemed citizens.
