Duane Lavern Honnold, the son of Vern and Vera (Thomas) Honnold, was born September 7, 1924 in rural Lorimor, Madison County, Iowa. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1943 and attended Iowa State for two years.  His marriage to Edna Smith took place on August 15, 1943 at the First Christian Church in Winterset and to this union four children were born.

During his working career Duane did many things but would mostly wish to be remembered as a farmer. He was also an accomplished brick and stone mason whose talents are seen still today in the stone work at the north shelter house and hedge maze in the Winterset City Park. He taught building trades at SWICC in Creston and was involved with several building projects on campus.  His building knowledge was also put to use when he was employed by the City of Winterset as a building inspector and he was also a truck driver and he drove school bus.

Duane was a member of numerous organizations including the First Christian Church in Winterset where he served on various committees and was a long-time Elder. He was a member of the Madison County Cattleman and Pork Producers having been president of both organizations. He was also a member of Farm Bureau, served as a Monroe Township Trustee and Constable, was on the board of REC and CIPCO and served on the board of the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service). Duane was also a member of Toastmasters, a 4-H leader and received many awards for his involvement in farming and volunteering throughout the years.  He was also a Lion’s Club member and many will recall his clowning around in the Lion’s Show as well as his balloon animals and talents as a ventriloquist with his ‘dummy’ Sally.

He enjoyed rock collecting, hunting for mushrooms and four leaf clovers as well as whittling, painting, fishing, raising cattle and being in nature. In 1977 he established the first children’s peddle pull tractor event in Westfield, Wisconsin which eventually found its way to the Madison County and Iowa State Fairs as well as many other places. In 2006, he and Edna were selected as the Madison County Covered Bridge King and Queen.  All this said, Duane was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and treasured any time spent with them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Edna Honnold of Lorimor; four children, Darrel (Pam) Honnold of Westfield, WI, Dwight (Lynn) Honnold of Lorimor, Patty Jo ‘PJ’ (Donnie) Schulz of Macksburg, and Paul (Sherry) Honnold of Clarinda; 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, two sisters, Gloria Weeks of Houston, TX, and Jackie (Phil) Anderson of Kansas City, MO; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Verl (Delene) Honnold, two sisters, Fern (Wayne) Davis, June (Gordon) Thorn and a brother-in-law, Homer Weeks.
