Death of S. R. Leonard

S. D. Leonard, familiarly know as Rigg, died February 11th at his home in St. Charles. A stroke of paralysis caused his death. M. Leonard was one of the pioneers of the county, having come to Winterset in 1858 with his father Dr. W. L. Leonard.

When 16 years of age, Sylvester, went to war with his father, serving as surgeon's assistant. He then enlisted in Co G and served until the end of the war. Mr. Leonard, after the war spent many years in western Kansas.

He later came to Winterset, where he engaged in the hardware business, in association with Mr. Kenyon and later with Mr. Tate. In 1886 he moved to St. Charles, conducting for a time a hardware store and later a general store.

He is survived by his wife and one son, William, also other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. A. E. George. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
