Joel Barnett, the son of Amos and Mary Mendenhall Barnett, was born March 4, 1852, in Keokuk county, Iowa.

His parents moved their family to Walla Walla, Wash., when he was seven years old, making the journey by ox-teams, taking six months. A few years ago he recorded the adventures, trials and hardships of this pilgrimage in a book which many of this community have read.

After seven years in Washington the family returned to Iowa by the same route traveled in going to Walla Walla. They located this time at Earlham, which was his home for 44 years.

On January 2, 1875, he was united in marriage to Lecy Thomas, daughter of Charles and Hannah Thomas of Earlham. They lived on a farm in that vicinity until they moved to California in 1910.

They were the parents of two sons, Gerald Olda of Yucalpa, Calif., and Ivey Wallins of Whittier, Calif.

The last eighteen years of his life were spent at the present family home in Whittier. The wife, Lecy Barnett, passed away September 22, 1923. Joel Barnett was a birthright member of the Friends Church and was faithful to its obligations while he lived. He is survived by his two sons and their families.

The deceased was a man of quiet life and habit, honest, industrious, kind and faithful as a citizen, a church member and in his home, “The memory of the just is blessed.”

Funeral services were held in the Friends Church April 15, 1935, and interment was in Rose Hills Memorial Park by the side of his wife.-------Whittier (Calif.) News
