ANDREW CHILMAN DEATH A SHOCK

Passed Away Quietly Thursday Night in His Room at Joe Prohaska’s

Andrew Chilman, well known local man, passed away at his room in the Joe Prohaska home sometime Thursday night. Death was due to heart failure.

Mr. Chilman had not been in good health for most of the summer, but had carried on his work as foreman of an extra ---- at the quarry. He had been at home Thursday evening and was studying the radio when the Prohaskas returned home about nine o’clock. Shortly afterward he retired to his room, and was not again seen alive. Friday morning, failing to get a response to his summons to breakfast, Joe Prohaska went to Mr. Chilman’s room, and found him. The sleeper’s arm was thrown across his forehead in a position of repose and death must have come mercifully. Doctors stated that he had been dead over four hours.

All Mr. Chilman’s relatives were present at the funeral held Sunday at the Church of Christ with Dr. A. N. Simpson officiating. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery. The following brief biography was read:

Andrew Hugo Chilman was born in Ostergotland, Sweden, December 15th, 1879, and died suddenly at the home of Joe Prohaska, Earlham, Iowa, November 5th, 1929, his age being 49 years, 10 months and 21 days.

He came to Iskeming, Michigan, from Sweden in the spring of 1887, and came to Sac county, Iowa in 1893, and to Des Moines in 1895 and later became the manager of the Telephone Company and was sent to Earlham in 1895 where he made his home almost continuously up until the time of his death.

He was married to Sadie Mendenhall, daughter of Richard Mendenhall, Earlham, in 1909 and to this union there was born one child Velma who survives him. Besides his daughter he leaves to mourn his loss two brothers and one sister. The brothers are: August Chilman, Platte, South Dakota; Frank Chilman, Omaha, Nebraska; and one sister, Mrs. Ida Kraft, Little Sioux, Iowa.

His wife predeceased him in 1914, in Dexter.

Mr. Chilman united with the Swedish Lutheran Church when a boy. He was industrious and honest in his relationship with his fellowmen. He was well spoken of by those who knew him best. Suddenly he has been freed from his labor and his works do follow him.
