Mrs. W. J. Barnett received the sad news Tuesday of the death of her only brother Ed Ballard at Paonia, Colo. Mr. Ballard spent all of his early life in this vicinity, moving to Colorado about twenty-five years ago. There he engaged in fruit raising on a large scale shipping many carloads to Earlham and other Iowa points. At one time he owned eighty acres of the present J. E. Hester homestead and later a farm north of De Soto. He is survived by Mrs. Ballard who is a sister of Barclay Stanton, of Des Moines. Particulars of his death are not available at this time.

Edwin M. Ballard, only son of Levi and Huldah Allen Ballard, was born near Earlham, Iowa, April 6, 1867, and died at his home near Paonia, Colorado, June 21, 1927, aged 60 years, 2 months and 15 days. He spent his youth and early manhood helping his father in the many duties of a pioneer Iowa farm. He attended school in winter and added stories of useful information by much reading and close observation.

He was always interested in the affairs of his country and was a great lover of nature and especially of the mountains of Colorado.

He was married to Sina Stanton at Earlham, Iowa April 11, 1889. Three daughters came to bless this happy home and the death of little Esther, at the age of five years was a great blow to her father.

In January, 1894, he came to Colorado and settled near Paonia, where the family still lives. He took much interest and pride in building up a home here and was identified with many affairs for the advancement of the town.

A birthright member of the Friends church, he gave liberally of his time and money in helping to build the Friends Church at Paonia. He also was a member of Paonia Lodge No. 121, A.F. & A.M. and of Paonia Order of Eastern Star.

Kind to his family and loyal to his friends, he will be greatly missed in his home and by his associates.

He leaves, beside his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Tressa Dawes of Paonia and Mrs. Edith Rugg of Denver, and two grandchildren, sons of Edith Allen Rugg, three sisters, Mrs. J. F. Taylor of Paonia, Mrs. W. J. Barnett of Earlham, Iowa, and Mrs. J. C. Thomson of Des Moines, Iowa, besides several nieces and nephews. Suffering more or less for many years from ill health, he went forward uncomplaining.
