Virginia I. McNichols, age 86, formerly of Ellettsville, IN, and St. Charles, IA, died on Thursday, November 27, 2014, in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Patterson United Methodist Church in Patterson, IA, with burial to follow at the McDonald-Chase Cemetery in Winterset, IA. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM on Monday. A memorial service will take place at the Ellettsville First United Methodist Church in Ellettsville, IN on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11:00 AM. George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD, is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Virginia I. Durand was born on May 29, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa, to George and Miriam (Howell) Durand. She was raised in Madison County, Iowa and graduated from Patterson High School. While in high school she met and fell in love with Willard McNichols, who later joined the Navy during WWII. While he served in the War effort, Virginia wrote him every day, and they married on June 15, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Patterson. They lived in St. Charles and Sidney, IA, then made their home in Ellettsville, Indiana in 1967 where Virginia lived until three years ago when she moved to Sioux Falls, SD, to be closer to her daughter.

Virginia earned a Masters of Library Science degree from Indiana University in 1970. She taught English then served 17 years as the Edgewood Middle School librarian, retiring in 1989. She was a member of P.E.O, Eastern Star, and the Retired Teachers Association.

Virginia had a passion for reading. She also enjoyed playing the piano, and played at Sunday church services as an adolescent. She excelled at correspondence, sending birthday and Christmas cards and letters to hundreds of people each year. Above all she loved spending time with her family. Virginia was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend who will be dearly missed.

Surviving are two sons, John McNichols and his wife, Linda, of Terre Haute, IN, and George McNichols and his wife, Karen of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Jeanette Miranda and her husband, Michael, of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, George Durand and his wife, Darlene of Grinnell, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Willard who died on September 29, 2004.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Virginia may be directed to Alzheimer research.
