Mrs. Oren Wetrich passed away at her home west of Earlham late Saturday after an illness of less than two weeks. First contracting an attack of erysipelas, the patient developed peritonitis Friday, and in spite of the call of yearning hearts and every effort of medical science, sank rapidly into the shadow of eternity in the space of twenty-four hours.

Funeral services were held in the Dexter Methodist Church with Rev. Barnstable officiating, and interment was in the Dexter cemetery.

The following obituary read at the service tells the simple life story of this good wife and mother:

Gertrude Ethel Heichel was born October 24, 1881, and died February 2, 1924. She was married December 19, 1901 to Oren Wetrich. To this union were born three children, Mabel, Hazel and Vernard, 7 years of age. Besides these children and the husband, Mrs. Wetrich leaves to mourn her loss her aged father, Henry Heichel, of McIntosh, South Dakota; and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Ackerman, of McIntosh, South Dakota; and Mrs. Lenna Moyle of Westport, South Dakota; one brother Herbert Heichel, of Dexter, Iowa.

Too much can scarcely be said in praise of the life and character of this splendid Christian woman. Left motherless at the age of 11 years, Mrs. Wetrich immediately assumed the responsibilities incident to the care and rearing of her younger isters and brother. She became a Christian early in life, and continually exerted a tender and refining Christian influence upon all with whom she came in contact, so that of her it may be truly said, “To know her was to love her.” She had expressed her readiness to leave this life even before her short sickness. She met death with a smile, and so peacefully that even the nurse could scarcely realize that the transition from the life to the next had occurred. Her last words and thoughts were concerned with the welfare of others. In all respects, Mrs. Wetrich was an ideal Christian wife and mother.
