Page 1ILL HEALTH CAUSES SUICIDE
Wm. Tarbell, formerly of this county, Suicides at Kalamazoo, Mich.
Wm. H. Tarbell, a resident of Lincoln township, Madison county, until about six years ago, committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday of last week at the home of his sister in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Ill health and the fear of insanity is assigned as the cause. The body was brought here for burial and the funeral service was held at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. E. E. Bennett, of Winterset.
The Kalamazoo Telegraph gave the following particulars.
William H. Tarbell, a resident of Kalamazoo for the past six years, committed suicide during the night by hanging himself to a beam in a barn at the home of his sister, Mrs. Buck 201 east Vine street. The facts seem to indicate that the act was contemplated at least two days before the deed was committed. Ill health is supposed to have been the cause of the suicide.
Mr. Tarbell came here from Winterset, Iowa, in 1900, and since that time he has been living with his sister, Mrs. W. R. Buck. During this time, Mr. Tarbell has been troubled with ill health and this worried him. But he seemed just as well and congenial as ever on Monday night, when he went with the rest of the family to the home of E. O. Mackey, on west Vine street, and attended a small gathering of friends. During the evening he seemed to all appearances to be in the best of spirits and talked about his property and of some good trades which he had made. At about 10:30 he left the house. Thus was about twenty minutes before the other members of the family left. They noticed his departure because he was always in the habit of going back and forth with the others, but they thought little of it at the time. When the other people arrived home they found the door unlocked and thinking that Mr. Tarbell had retired they went to bed and did not know of the suicide until they were notified by a neighbor this morning.
