EMMA JEAN BERGMAN, Sugar Land, Tx

Emma Jean Bergman, 75, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Memorial Hermann Hospital, in Sugar Land, TX, with her family by her side. Jean was born in Winterset, Iowa, on February 7, 1939, to Alberta (McDonald) and Eugene Binns. Jean graduated from DeSoto School in 1957. After graduating from high school, Jean and Cliff married on July 3, 1957. Jean worked at Banker's Life, Look Magazine, an investment firm, VanWerden & Hulse Law Firm, and Drake University during her career, all located in Des Moines and Adel, IA. Jean loved her career and her co-workers at Drake University and stayed there until her retirement in the fall of 2002 after 23 years. At that time, Jean and Cliff moved to Sugar Land, Texas.

In her new retired life in Sugar Land and Richmond, Texas, Jean became the "volunteering grandmother". She volunteered at Brazos Bend Elementary, Sartartia Middle School, and Travis High School, the schools where her granddaughters attended. She helped in the library, helped in the nurse's clinic, did laminating jobs for teachers, sold pizza, baked and sold cookies, and the list goes on. Jean was voted "Volunteer of the Year" for Travis High School during the 2012-2013 school year of which she was very proud. Jean was also a Girl Scout troop volunteer for 13 years, serving as co-cookie manager for her granddaughters Girl Scout troops along with her daughter. Jean was also Treasurer of the Travis Orchestra Booster Association for 4 years and was intending to serve as Secretary for the organization this school year. Jean loved her family and the new friends that she made during her years volunteering in Texas. The friends and neighbors that Jean met in Texas were so supportive of Jean and Cliff as they both suffered with health problems this spring and summer, and she loved them dearly. Also during their years in Texas, Jean and Cliff enjoyed taking many trips together, and many of those trips included visits back to Iowa to see their dear friends there. One of the many things that was so special about Jean was her ability to keep in touch with friends no matter how close or how far.

Jean is survived by her husband of 57 years, Clifford Bergman; her daughter and son-in-law, Kelli and Dan Mitchell; and her two adored granddaughters, McKenna and Morgan Mitchell, all of Sugar Land, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 27, 2014, at McCalley Funeral Home, 735 S. 14th St., Adel, with a visitation with the family beginning at 10:00 AM, prior to the beginning of the service. Interment will follow the service at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
