Robert A. Witt, Sr., Macksburg
June 29, 1922 - August 20, 2014

Robert Witt, 92, of Macksburg, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, August 25, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg. A visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, August 24 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where the family will be present to receive friends 3 to 6 p.m. Burial will be in the Moon Cemetery, rural Macksburg. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Macksburg United Methodist Church or the Madison County Historical Society. Online condolences may be made to the family at ochiltree.com.

Robert was born June 29, 1922 in Madison County, Iowa, the son of Ora and Carrie (Mayer) Witt. He graduated from Macksburg High School in 1940. Robert and his wife, Maxine Paxton, were married on October 24, 1952 in Winterset.

Robert was a township trustee in Macksburg, and also was on the historical board as well as a city council member. He was a member of the Madison County Historical Society and Farm Bureau, and spent several years on the election board for the Grand River Township in Madison County. He was a member of the Madison County Pork Producers and Madison County Cattlemen's Association. He served as Republican Central Committee Chairman for Grand River Township. Robert operated a blacksmith shop in Macksburg for a number of years, but spent the bulk of his life farming.

Robert is survived by his sons, Richard (Betty) Witt of Blue Springs, MO and Robert (Mary Lou) Witt, Jr., of Macksburg; five grandchildren, Robert (Aurora) Witt III, Deidre (John) Bryan, Adam Witt, Julia (Eric) Green, and David (Christina) Witt; seven great-grandchildren, Lilian and Ayla Bryan, Jessica, Ellen and Richard Green, Justin Witt, and Evan Witt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, his parents, and two sisters, Myrtilla Baker and Helena Beatty.
