MURIEL ANN HUMPHREY, Pella

Muriel Ann Ross was born in Lacrosse, Wisconsin on August 20, 1925, to Reverend Archie A. and Dora H. (Schmidt) Ross. She was the oldest of three children. Her siblings were Kenneth Ross of Cleveland, Tennessee and the late Rachel Morgan of Dayton, Tennessee.

Muriel spent her childhood years in Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, and finally in Iowa. This is one of the benefits of being a Presbyterian minister’s child (a PK!). In 1943, Muriel earned her high school diploma from Bedford High School in Bedford, Iowa.

She then attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri where Muriel met the love of her life, Mr. Carl Marvin Humphrey. Muriel earned a Bachelor’s d Carl were united in marriage on August 3, 1947. Muriel taught in Rock Port, Missouri for one year while Carl finished up his course work.

Upon Carl’s graduation, Muriel and Carl moved to Winterset, Iowa where both accepted teaching contracts. Muriel taught a total of 16 years at North Ward Elementary School in the Winterset Community School District.

Muriel and Carl moved to Pella, Iowa in 1966 when Carl accepted an offer to be the Business Manager for Central College. Shortly thereafter, Muriel accepted a teaching contract with the Pella Community School District. She taught first grade at Lincoln and then Webster Elementary Schools, for a combined 22 years of service.

Muriel and Carl were the proud parents of three children: Teresa Ann, Marc Allen, and Lori Jean. Terri is a retired Kindergarten Teacher in Knoxville, Iowa; Marc is a practicing attorney in Des Moines, Iowa; and Lori is a Kindergarten teacher in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Muriel and Carl loved to travel. Whether the trip was near or far, they always met new friends and enjoyed the scenery. They visited many of the states as well as some of the European countries. They were a part of a “Golf Group” where the men would golf and have supper together while the women shopped and then enjoyed supper together. Muriel enjoyed serving…as a teacher; at the Pella Windmill, giving out tourist information; and at her church, First Reformed Church, where she helped with the children’s Sunday School program and served as a Pastoral Care Elder. She loved being around children and caring for them was her ministry. Muriel enjoyed baking (especially pies) and inviting neighbors over for coffee time, always setting the table with pretty dishes and festive napkins. In recent months, she especially appreciated car rides around Pella and savoring sandwiches and conversation while looking at the beauty of Red Rock Lake. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy and spending time with them was always the highlight of her day.

Muriel is survived by her three children and their families: Terri and John Gotta of Knoxville, Iowa; Ryan Carl and Brooke Vink of Scottsdale, Arizona; Amanda Lee and Jason Renaud of Denver, Colorado; Alissa Gotta and her children Braelyn Ensor and Maddox Houser of Tipton, Iowa. Marc and Jennifer Humphrey of Earlham Iowa; Benjamin Garret Humphrey of Des Moines, Iowa; Hannah Ellsworth and Dirk Vanderwielen of Des Moines, Iowa; Jacob Ross Humphrey of Highland Ranch, Colorado; John Charles Hampel, Zoya Butterfly Humphrey, Belicia Love Humphrey, and Thomas Jefferson Humphrey of Earlham, Iowa. Lori and Brian Fegley of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Allison Michelle Fegley of Urbandale, Iowa; Peter Jacob Fegley of Tiffin, Iowa

Muriel leaves her brother Kenneth Ross and his wife, Peggy of Cleveland, Tennessee; and her granddogs, Floyd and Homer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents Rev. Archie and Dora Ross; and her sister and brother- in- law Rachel and Ken Morgan.
