Veronica Porter, 80 of Peru, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Winterset Care Center North.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 27, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset where the family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 28 at Ochiltree’s with burial to immediately follow in the Peru Cemetery.

Memorials to the family will be appreciated.

Veronica Mae Roush was born September 5, 1933 in Des Moines, the daughter of James and Blanche (Decker) Roush. She grew up in Peru attending school there until she went to Winterset for high school, graduating in the class of 1951. Her marriage to Weaver Jacob Porter took place on January 23, 1953 in Adel.

Veronica was a homemaker, raising her children and she also worked outside the home as secretary for Travelers Insurance in Des Moines for several years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Peru where she was active and involved in many activities over the years and served on the Peru council as well as mayor of Peru. She was also active in the Peru Women’s Society, Winterset Saddle Club, Peru’s Apple Days and she was a Life Member of the WHS Alumni Association. She also enjoyed playing cards, cooking and doing crafts. All this said, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved nothing more than spending time with her family.

Veronica is survived by her husband, Weaver Porter of Peru; her six children, Bill (Tonja) Porter of Peru; Matthew (Sandy) Porter of Peru; Cindy Porter of Winterset; Gayle (Henry) Kibbe of Peru; Toni (Dan) Waltz of Winterset and Wade (Becky) Porter of Winterset. She is also survived by a sister, Janet Roush of Papallion, NE; 14 grandchildren; Fona Kay Holtry, Seth Weaver Porter, Ashley Elaine Porter, Jason Ray Reasoner, Angela Jo Holtry, Rachel Lea Miller, Stephen Troy Bush, Charlotte Ann Speer, Jacki Jaynne Graeve, Todd Jay Porter, Brett Jacob Porter, Justin Wade Porter, Bart Andrew Porter, Colt Robert E. Porter. She is also survived by 29 great grandchildren; Mazie Woods, Mikailyn Holtry, Linda Holtry, Maddie Holtry, Logan Porter, Aubree Porter, Jesse Holtry, Quentin Holtry, Montana Holtry, Wyatt Miller, Cheyenne Miller, Rick Bush, Skylar Speer, Trenton Speer, Tanner Speer, Troyce White, Utonda White, Tanner Porter, Tessa Porter, Taylar Porter, Tori Porter, Karli Porter, Kelsey Porter, Maddison Porter, Jacob Porter, Lucas Porter, Briley Porter, Carson Porter, Lillian Porter and one great-great grandchild, Cambrie Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, Helen Houseman, Donald Roush, James Roush Jr., Lillian Totten and Wayne Roush; a grandson, Jessie James Porter.
