AUDREY HATFIELD PLATNICK, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

Audrey Hatfield Platnick died Apr. 13, 2014, just shy of her 93rd birthday, from respiratory problems.

Audrey was born in Colorado and lived there until her family moved to Iowa in the late 20s and soon thereafter bought the Hatfield farm in St. Charles. While her father insisted she study nursing so she could support herself, Audrey found her own path. After attending one year at Drake University, she departed for New York City, where she lived for over 70 years. She graduated from Columbia University in 1947 with a business degree and married Joe Platnick in December 1957. Until she was hospitalized in January, Audrey still worked for an architectural firm and remained active at Park Avenue Christian Church where she had been a member for over 70 years. She was a proud member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and received the Susan B. Anthony award from NOW that honors grassroots activists dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in New York City. She also received the inaugural Elizabeth B. Grannis award from Park Avenue Christian Church for outstanding contributions by women to church and society.

Six days after Audrey’s death, her husband Joe also passed away. Audrey is survived by her son Joe, his wife Kathy and her grandchildren Sara and Stephen, her sister Marjorie Wetzel, and many nieces and nephews, including Kathy Lee, Kay Colon and Harlan Wetzel.

A memorial service to celebrate Audrey’s and Joe’s life will be held on May 18, 2014, at Park Avenue Christian Church in New York City.
