Death of Joseph Carter

Joseph Carter, a well known citizen of Douglas township for many years, and more recently of Winterset, died very suddenly last Friday. He was born in Indiana April 10, 1832. When he came to Iowa in 1851 he first settled in Tama county and he was one of the eight original settlers of that county. In 1859 he came to Madison county. He with three others went to Pike’s Peak during the gold excitement, walking all the way, and experienced great hardships before he returned from what proved to be an unfortunate expedition.

He was married in 1863 to Miss Adella Evans, who alone survives him, there being no children. He was a kind hearted man and had many friends; was disposed at one time to be a skeptic in religious matters but during his later years was a firm believer, and died in the faith of the Primitive Baptist church.

His funeral occurred last Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church north east of Winterset where he was buried. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. F. Jordan.
