Abel Choate was born March 11, 1820 in Enfield, New Hampshire and departed this life Sept. 30, 1908 at his home near Pitzer, aged 88 years, 6 months and 10 days. He was the last survivor of a family of seven. In early life he was married to Eliza Ann Paine and soon after they emigrated to Van Buren county this state, where they resided for a number of years.

To this union two children were born, one dying in infancy. He was again married on August 31, 1857 to Rhoda Caroline Talcott. They resided near Biggsville, Illinois until the spring of 1869, when they came to Madison county and located on the farm which has since been his home. Ten children were born to them, three dying in infancy.

He is survived by three sons, five daughters, twenty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His wife died May 25, 1907. For many years he was been a member of the North River Church of Christ. Thought born down by age and infirmity, his faith in his Savior was strong and he looked forward to the time when he should lay his burdens down and be at rest.

The funeral was held October 2d, the services being conducted by Rev. Lewis and Rev. Barr, and the remains were laid to rest beside his wife in Fairview cemetery.
