Ruth Sellers, Dexter

Ruth Sellers passed away Sunday, Dec. 1st, at home in Mt Shasta, CA. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Jan 4th, at the Dexter United Methodist church.

Ruth Eloise Bower Sellers was born on January 1, 1915 in Chariton, Iowa to Claude and Jessie Bower; five years to the date of her older sister's birthdate. She grew up on a farm in Russell, and took for granted a life of hard work and self discipline; and took, as well, much joy in her relationships with her friends and the natural world.

Ruth Eloise graduated from Simpson College Conservatory of Music, working full time for her room and board; and after graduation she taught in Cambria, Iowa and Kingsport, Tennessee to pay off her college debt before marrying her high school sweetheart, Clell "Slim" Sellers. She was offered a full scholarship to Juilliard, but chose to move back to Iowa and marry Clell about whom she always said she was so glad he waited for her.

Ruth and Slim settled initially in Earlham and moved to Dexter in 1940 where he worked for a series of John Deere implement companies and she taught music to generations of children. Ruth always said she had the best job ever and many of her students felt the same about her. She had a big heart for children and brought out the best in her students.

She was the Healthy Baby at the Iowa State Fair and loved Iowa for its beauty, its bounty; and the people of her community and church in Dexter. She loved a good book, beautiful poetry, a good brass band, basketball, her garden, her family. Ruth and Clell had three children: Beth, Jeff, and Jack; to whom they gave much love and taught much joy.

Contributions in her honor may be sent to the Dexter Public Library or the Dexter United Methodist Church.
