Koser Dean Hudson died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
Koser Dean Hudson, son of Fred M. and Gertrude (Wildin) Hudson, was born Oct. 8, 1937, at Winterset, Iowa. Dean spent the first 10 years of his life on the family farm southwest of Winterset, then moved to Creston, Iowa, where he graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 1955.
Upon completing high school, Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force, receiving his training in the weather service unit as a weather forecaster. He served in Arkansas and Mississippi, and also spent nine years at the Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage, Alaska.
It was during his time of serving in Alaska that Dean was married to Bernice Ludeman on Dec. 10, 1971, at Anchorage. Dean and Bernice then moved to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb., where Dean served until retiring in 1975 after 20 years of service to his country.
With the military portion of his career complete, Dean and Bernice moved their family back to Alaska, where Dean was employed by a private consulting firm, working various weather related jobs until completely retiring in 1996. With the children all grown and gone from home, Dean and Bernice moved to Niobrara, Neb., in July of 1996, and have made their home there ever since.
While living in Niobrara, Dean became a major part of the community, serving on several village boards, was a member of the American Legion, served with the Niobrara Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Rolling Thunder Car Club, was an active member of the Niobrara Promoters organization, served on the Library board, was a member of the L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery board, and was involved with the Niobrara State Park Bluebird project.
Faith was also a major part of Dean’s life, and during his 16 years of living in Niobrara, he was an active member of the Niobrara Presbyterian Church. Dean devoted countless hours of volunteering and stewardship to the church and its congregation, and found much enjoyment in spending time with his spiritual family in Niobrara. Dean will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, and also for his love of life and great concern for all of his family and friends.
Dean always said that being born in Winterset, Iowa, he came into this world three blocks straight east of where John Wayne was born, but the town forgot to put a sign up like they did for John. While there are no signs to mark where Dean has been during his time here on earth, there are countless friends and lives that he touched that stand as a testament to what a great person Dean was, and he will be dearly missed by all that were fortunate enough to have known him. Dean went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Yankton, SD, at the age of 76 years.
Dean’s life and memory are forever cherished by his wife of over 41 years, Bernice Hudson of Niobrara, Neb.; son, David Kent and wife Pamela of Alaska; daughter, Alisa Dawn Quiett and husband Paul of Oklahoma; daughter, Tamara Ackley and husband Pete of Oklahoma; daughter, Tracy Hudson of North Carolina; son, Joe Rogers and wife Debra of South Carolina; son, Jimmy Rogers and wife Julie of Alaska; and daughter, Janice Silber and husband Marc of California; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Jane Schweer of Iowa, Bonnie Forsyth of Iowa, and Susan Jenson of Washington state; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Gertrude Hudson; son, Keith; daughter, Jennifer Pursell; and brother-in-law, Richard Ludeman.
Brockhaus Funeral Home of Niobrara is in charge of arrangements.
