LESTER JACOBSON, WINTERSET

Lester Jacobson, 84, of Winterset, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des
Moines.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. at the S.K. Rogers and Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa, with Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Inurnment will follow in West Union Cemetery.

Lester Herman Jacobson was born on Oct. 24, 1928, in Dover Township, Fayette County, Iowa to Martin Herman and Virgie Fern (Johnston) Jacobson. Following eighth grade graduation, Lester began helping his father on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Darlene Oma Kohler on Feb. 2, 1951, at his parents’ home. Lester proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army as an Instructor Repair Foreman from April 13, 1951, until Jan. 27, 1953. Lester worked as a mechanic at Falb Motors and Light Farm Machinery in Elgin. He also worked in West Union at Elsheimers Meat Packing and at Wilbur Ford for 17 years, as a body repair man. Lester then followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over as sexton of the West Union Cemetery following his father’s retirement after 21 years. Lester worked as Sexton for 24 years, retiring in 1994. He continued working at the cemetery resetting old grave markers until his stroke in 2006.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark; parents, Herman and Virgie; a brother, Theodore; and a sister, Donna Miller.

Lester is survived by his wife, Darlene of Winterset; daughter, Connie (Paul) Klimesh of Winterset; three grandchildren; a sister, Yvonne Griffin; a brother, Ron (Gloria) Jacobson; and many other relatives and friends.

S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
