St. Charles and Vicinity

The sudden and unexpected death of Henry Hayden of this city, which occurred at noon on August 31st following a stroke of paralysis, which on the Monday evening just before, overtook him in his home in the midst of unusual good health and bright prospects, has caused a cloud of sadness to hover over the entire community. Mr. Hayden was known and highly respected by almost everyone in Warren and Madison county, where he resided since childhood. His honesty, his gentlemanly manners, his good habits, his fine business qualifications, his kindness of heart and nobleness of character insured him against criticism and none but regrets are expressed at his untimely removal.

For the past four years, and from its organization, he has been the cashier of the J. F. Johnston bank. He was secretary of the Johnston Land Co. and occupied position of trust and importance in civic and official life.

The bereaved are his widowed wife and three grown sons, from whom no sympathy is withheld.

Short services were held in the home on Saturday evening and on Sunday the remains, under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, were taken to Indianola, where complete services were held, a sermon preached by Rev. Rarick of this city, and burial in the family plot in the Indianola cemetery.

The deceased was in his fifty-fourth year and while not of rugged physique enjoyed remarkable good health, or at least made but few complaints. As an evidence of the high standing of the deceased and his stricken relatives a large procession of friends from St. Charles and vicinity accompanied the funeral cortege.
