Mr. James J. Conner, 87, passed away October 8, 2013 at the Perry Lutheran Home. Prior to moving to Perry, Jim lived for nearly 40 years on the eastside of Des Moines.
Jim was born November 9, 1925 in Cumming, Iowa, the son of Stephen and Gertrude (Dooley) Conner. Following high school, Jim was drafted into the US Army and faithfully served his country during WWII. Jim earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying. In 1966 he was married to Therese Kelleher and together they made their home in Des Moines. Jim worked as a machinist at Eagle Iron Works and retired in 1993. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and enjoyed metal and woodworking, military history, gunsmithing, hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Jim was a self taught guitarist and enjoyed early bluegrass music. He entertained people with his stories, some true and some with flair.
He is survived by his daughters, Clara Hanson (Bob James) of Seattle, Rita Conner (Vic Cowles) of Ames, Sara Conner (Mark Sidwell) of Indianapolis and Mollie Pawlosky (Joe) of Dallas County; three grandchildren, Samantha Nimmo, Lars Hanson and Tony Pawlosky; one great grandson, Judah Atticus James Ziebol; sister, Rose (Harvey) Rosenberg of St. Paul, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Therese; siblings, Francis, Clarence, Andrew, Margaret, Mary Catherine, Vincent, Michael and Austin.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 12, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Cemetery, Cumming. Visitation will be 5-7pm, Friday at Iles Grandview Park Chapel, with a vigil service beginning at 7pm. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church or St. Jude Hospice.
