Earlham

George Couch passed away Thursday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Pryor following a several months illness. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the Friend’s church with Thomas Humphrey of Des Moines, a former pastor at Waukee and a past Grand Chaplain of the Odd Fellow lodge, having charge of the services. He was assisted by the Rev. Hester of the Friend’s church. Music was furnished by a male quartette composed of Fred Fry, Scott Schifflett, Will Price, and P.E. Rose. The pall bearers were Odd Fellow brothers. Mr. Couch was 73 years and 4 days old at the time of his death and was born and had spent all but a few years of his life in Dallas county. He leaves to mourn his going, one daughter, Mrs. Lora Pryor, four grandchildren, Harvey Leo, Ivan, Mildred and Rolland Pryor, four brothers and two sisters and a host of friends.

George W. Couch, son of Anderson and Ruth Couch was born in Dallas County, Iowa, November 22, 1858 and spent all his life in Dallas County except a few years spent in Buena Vista County.

On March 11, 1883 he was married to Florence Lillian Hodson, who passed away February 13, 1901. To them were born three children Mable Couch Lee, who died May 17, 1914, Freddie, who died April 28, 1888, and Lora Couch Pryor, who has made a home for her father and kindly cared for him and nursed him during his long illness.

Mr. Couch had been in failing health for a number of years. On July 6 he entered the Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines and underwent a serious operation but the nature of his malady was such that human skill could do nothing but ease his suffering, and after almost twenty weeks of intense and patient suffering he passed peacefully away November 26, 1931, aged 73 years and four days.

Mr. Couch was a member of Earlham I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 546, admitted March 14, 1907.

He was a kind and loving father, a good neighbor and a man respected by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Lora Pryor, four grandchildren, Howard Lee, Ivan, Mildred, and Rolland Pryor, four brothers, H. M. and M. M. Couch, of Adel; H. E., of Shawnee, Okla.; E. B., of Siloam Spring, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. J. S. Fish, of Adel; Hannah Davis, of Sweetwater, Okla.; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Nov. 28, from the Earlham Friends Church, Grand Chaplain T. S. Humphrey, of Des Moines officiated at the services. Last rites at the grave were under auspices of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Burial was in Earlham cemetery.
