Cynthia Margaret, daughter of Washington and Fanny Shultz, was born in Park county, Indiana, Aug. 18, 1841, and departed this life Jan. 16, 1921, aged 79 years, 4 months, and 28 days. In 1852, she with her parents, moved to Mahaska county, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Garrett VanRossum on July 14, 1864. In 1872 they came to Madison county, and located on the farm where she has ever since resided. To this union were born nine children, three boys and six girls; three girls and one boy dying in infancy. One son, David, died Oct. 2, 1916, and a daughter, Louisa, died May 13, 1919. One son and two daughters survive her: John G., of Lismore, Minn.; Mrs. Estella Close of Colby, Kans., and Mrs. Ella Thompson, who reside on the home farm. One sister, Mrs. Maria Jane Wilson of New Virginia and 13 grandchildren and a great grandchild also survive her. Her husband died Jan. 4, 1911.

She united with the Presbyterian church at Olivet, Mahaska county, in 1870. After their removal to Madison county, they placed their membership with the Presbyterian church in St. Charles. After that church was disbanded, they united with the Christian church in Truro, in 1901, of which they remained faithful members till death.

She was a faithful wife, a good mother, and was always ready to minister in any home where sickness and death called her. While her health has been gradually failing for some time, her last sickness was of short duration. She was ready and willing to go and the end came peacefully. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her.

Funeral services were held in St. Charles in the M.E. church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Rayburn, pastor of the Christian church in Truro, and interment was in the St.Charles cemetery.
