Mrs. John Carter

Adeline Smothers, daughter of Andrew and Mary Smothers, was born in Scott county, Illinois, December 6, 1842. This was her home until her marriage to John Carter on September 13, 1866. The young couple came directly to Madison county, Iowa where they have since resided.

She was converted at the age of eleven years and joined the Baptist church. After coming to Iowa she became a member of the United Brethren church to which her husband’s family belonged. Her home was one of pioneer hospitality where the itinerant minister was given a special welcome. She was a true Christian, a loyal friend and neighbor and regular attendance at church services until late years when the infirmities of age had prevented.

She was the mother of seven children, three having preceded her in death, Alonzo who died in 1891 and Johnny and Willie who died in infancy. She is survived by her aged husband, two sons and two daughters, Peter and Oscar Carter and Mrs. Emma Conard, of St. Charles, and Mrs. Estella Jones, of Winterset, also six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, three brothers, William, Oscar and Edgar Smothers, and a sister, Miss Sophronia Smothers, also survive.

Though physically frail for years her mind was good and she enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She was stricken with paralysis August 7 and passed quietly from her earthly home on August 22, aged 73 years, 8 months and 16 days.

Funeral services were held at Blair Chapel Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. G. T. Andrews. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mrs. B. F. Haynes, of Trenton, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. Burke Smothers and daughters Sibyl and Ruby, of Winchester, Illinois.
