OTTUMWA — Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Joan McGiverin, 83, of Iowa City, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 11:45 p.m. July 9, 2013 at Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center.
She was born June 7, 1930 in Madison County to Dean and Pauline Christensen Kuntz. She married Arthur A. McGiverin on April 20, 1951 in Iowa City.
Joan was a 1948 graduate of Winterset High School and a 1951 graduate of the College of Nursing University of Iowa. She was a registered nurse, retiring from Ottumwa Hospital in 1986.She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa, and had been a member of Laureate Guild and P.E.O. Joan was an avid bridge player, quilter and gardener.
Surviving is her husband, Arthur; her children, Teresa McGiverin and her husband, Jack Klaus, of Kansas City, Mo., Thomas McGiverin and his wife, JoAnn Masterson, of Johnston, Bruce McGiverin and his wife, Christine, of Cidra, Puerto Rico and Nancy Seaba and her husband, James, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; three grandchildren, Sarah Seaba of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Sean McGiverin and Loic McGiverin, both of Cidra, Puerto Rico; and a sister, Margaret Burgmaier of Winterset.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with Father Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Friday. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation.
