RICHARD NEWTON, COLORADO

Richard W. Newton, 69, of Longmont, Colo., died Thursday, June 20, 2013, from brain cancer of eight months.

An open house to celebrate Rich’s life will be held Saturday, June 29, at his home in Longmont. Iowa services are pending for Sept. 6 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery and Winterset Cemetery. Details will follow as the date nears.

Rich was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Winterset to Wayne and Pauline (Frey) Newton. He was a 1962 graduate of Winterset High School, and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He married Donna Frutiger in December 1993. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the 101st Airborne and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; two brothers, Dr. Robert (Elaine) of Winterset and Keith (Mary Kay) of West Des Moines; a son, Jeff of California; three step children, Troy, Evvy (Jeff Nelson), and Tracy Frutiger, all of Colorado; and several other family members and friends.

Richard died Thursday, June 20, 2013, after an eight month battle with brain cancer. He was 69.

A military graveside will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, September 6 at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery near Van Meter. A second committal will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, September 6 in the Winterset Cemetery and a reception will immediately follow at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Memorial contributions in memory of Richard may be directed to any organization of the donor's choice.

Rich was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Winterset to Wayne and Pauline (Frey) Newton. He was a 1962 graduate of Winterset High School, and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the 101st Airborne and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He married Donna Frutiger in December 1993. Rich was an athletic trainer at the University of Colorado and retired from IBM.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; two brothers, Dr. Robert (Elaine) of Winterset and Keith (Mary Kay) of West Des Moines; a son, Jeff of California; three step children, Troy, Evvy (Jeff Nichols), and Tracy Frutiger, all of Colorado; and several other family members and friends.
