Kathleen King, 61, died July 8, 2003 at the hospice unit of the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto, California. She had lived in California for the past twenty years. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 14 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Irish Settlement. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Westover Funeral Home, where a Rosary service will be held at 6 p.m.

She was the daughter of Anthony and Mary King of Des Moines where she was born. She graduated from ST. Joseph’s Academy and then went on to receive her nursing degree at Creighton St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha; her B.A. from Clarke College and an M.A. in Cardiac Nursing from the Catholic University of America. Before moving to California, she taught nursing for South Carolina Baptist College in Charleston. During her career she specialized in intensive care nursing and was a member of the first heart surgery team at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. For the last years of her career she worked at the Dialysis Unit at El Camino Hospital in Sunnyvale, California.

Kathleen leaves a sister, Patricia Piper of Redwood City, CA; a brother, James R. (Dick) King of Wichita Falls, TX; three nieces, Amy Shier of Olympia, WA, Jinny Linhart of Phoenix, AZ, and Sara Tork of Geneva, IL; two nephews, Timothy Piper of Mechanicsbury, PA, and Gregory King of Wichita Falls; and finally six grandnieces and five grandnephews. She also leaves many friends in the United States and beyond.

Throughout her life, Kathleen was devoted to her patients, her friends and especially her family. The family wishes that memorials be dedicated to cancer research.
