Harry Vernon Haigh, 86, died peacefully with his family surrounding him on July 6, 2005. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Park Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Harry was born November 23, 1918 in Frankfort, South Dakota. Harry served in the Air Force during WWII. He was attached to the 12th core of General Patton’s 3rd Army as weather support. Following his military service he worked for the U.S. Weather Service in Des Moines until his retirement in 1973.
He was involved in Y’s men, the Isaac Walton League, and was a past deacon of his church. Harry enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, visiting with friends, reading antiques and his Chicago Cubs.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Zola; sons, Gene (Beth) of Urbandale, IA and John (Michelle) of Cambridge, MA; grandchildren, Jason (Lori) of West Des Moines, IA, Brad (Natalie) of Denver, CO, Alex and Anna Haigh of Cambridge; sister, Hazel (Arnold) Simons of St. Lawrence, SD. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold and Howard; and baby son, Joel Dean.
A visitation will be held at Westover Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 8. Memorial contributions may be made to the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church or Reserve on Walnut Creek for the flag beautification project.
