Gary Joe Alexander

Gary Joe Alexander, 62, passed away peacefully at the Des Moines Veteran’s Hospital on February 9, 2013. Visitation will be held Friday, February 15, 2013, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Services will be private. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden, IA.

Gary was born in Des Moines, IA and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968. In 1972 Gary joined the US Air Force and served during Viet Nam. Following the service, most of his career was spent as a small engine mechanic. Gary most recently worked with his wife, Dana at CE by Design in customer service and administration.

Gary loved his pets and had a special way with each of them. He enjoyed camping out, and cooking his many special recipes outside on his grills, no matter what the weather was like. Gary enjoyed playing his guitar and singing Southern Gospel and Country music. He performed with his wife, Dana, and they started a music ministry, By His Grace. His favorite quote was from Bill Gaither, “On our very best day, we are but sinners saved by God’s grace,” and his favorite song was “He Touched Me.” He had a special relationship with God and served as he believed he was led.

He is survived by his wife, Dana Pettigrew-Alexander; her son, Lonnie Dupuis Jr. and daughter, Marilyn Davenport. He was Grandpa Gary to Dana’s grandkids, Kristian, Michael and Austin Dupuis, Shelby and Anthony Davenport, and Phoeby Simpson.

Memorial contributions in Gary’s memory may be directed to the veterans, cancer research or causes you support.
