Motorcycle-Van Collision Fatal to Peru Youth

Aaron David Smith, 13, was killed and his 12-year-old nephew Shawn Nelson Smith was critically injured last Saturday afternoon in the collision of the motorcycle they were riding with a van driven by Don Chandler of New Virginia.

The accident happened about 2 p.m., one-half mile east of the so-called 10 mph curve southeast of Peru or three miles west of Truro on the county pavement.

Madison County Sheriff Rex Rouse said the motorcycle, driven by Aaron Smith was northbound, across the highway, and was struck broadside by the westbound van. No charges were filed in the case, which was investigated by Trooper Richard McCormick of the highway patrol. ----- The small bike they were riding was owned by Donald Smith, the older boy’s father.

Both boys were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Winterset for emergency treatment and transferred to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where Aaron Smith was pronounced dead on arrival. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith of rural Peru.

Shawn Smith was still reported in critical condition early this week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith of Keosauqua.

Funeral services for Aaron Smith were held Tuesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. from Grace Baptist Church in Winterset. He was born August 28, 1964, in Winterset to Donald and Esther Caudill Smith and attended eighth grade at Interstate 35 Junior High at New Virginia.
