Death at 85 of Bessie Johnson

Bessie A. Johnson of St. Charles, a housewife and the wife of Ray Johnson, died Friday, March 3, 1978, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was 85, born August 17, 1892, in Warren County, the daughter of Alex and Sally Leftwitch Johnston.

Mrs. Johnson was married to Ray Johnson in Warren County on February 26, 1913. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1965. She was affiliated with the United Methodist Church of St. Charles and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Model Chapter No. 174.

Survivors include a son, Alex Johnson of Indianola; two daughters, Northa Strawn and Sally Strawn of St. Charles; a daughter-in-law, Catharine Johnson Scrivner of St. Charles; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and a sister, Inez Hart of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, also a son, Bill; a brother, a sister and a great grandchild.

Funeral services for Bessie Johnson were conducted Monday, March 6, at 2 p.m. from the United Methodist Church of St. Charles with burial at the St. Charles Cemetery. Rev. Rolland C. Towell of St. Charles officiated.
