LEWIS H. JORDAN - WINTERSET

Lewis H. Jordan, 82, of Winterset, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 31, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. As per his request, his body was cremated and will be interred in the Winterset Cemetery at a later date.

Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis S. and Hannah Jordan, and his brother Herb Boberg.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Irma Jordan; daughter, Jill Tuttle; sons, Lewis S. (Candace) and Grant (Jessica) Jordan; sister, Nancy Cole; mother-in-law, Dorothy Chastain; and his five grandchildren, Jennifer Mroz, Cory Tuttle, and Austin, Zachary, and Carleigh Jordan.

He was born April 12, 1930 on a farm northeast of Spencer, Iowa. After attending high school in Detroit, Michigan, Lew hitchhiked to and attended college at the University of Iowa. After 2 ½ years in college, Lew enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1951-1954. He then returned to the University of Iowa to resume his education. He graduated in 1957, and then graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1958. Lew then moved to Winterset and joined the local firm of Webster & Frederick. He served as Madison County Attorney (1963-1967), and City Attorney of Winterset (1973-1975). He was a member of many legal committees and associations, including the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Iowa State Bar Foundation, and served on the Board of Governors. He was a also lifetime member of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers. He spent his legal career of over 50 years as a partner at the same firm, and often found it easy to forget when it came to settling the bill for his services. He also always had time to help the teenagers in the community in need of legal service. Lew received a 50 year award from the Iowa State Bar Association in 2008, and retired from his firm of Jordan, Oliver, Walters, and Smith in June 2008.

Over the years, Lew's clients became friends and he treated his friends as family. He gave all that he could while serving the Winterset community. He was very active in politics and was instrumental in forming the Madison County Democrats and served as Chairman for several years. Lew spent many years as lay reader at the Trinity Episcopal Church and was vital in keeping the church alive in Winterset. He loved reading and got plenty of use out of the Winterset Public Library. He was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye athletics, and was a season ticket holder for Iowa football for over 50 years. Lew valued his membership with the American Legion for over 50 years.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 PM Sunday at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lew's name to the Salvation Army, the Winterset Public Library, and the Madison County Memorial Hospital.
