Isaiah Nixon died at his home in Hanley on Saturday, March 27. Funeral services were held in the Hanley M. E. church Monday at 2 p.m. He was a soldier of the civil war.

Hanley

Saturday night occurred the death of I. Nixon of this place, the last survivor of the Civil War, in our village. Apoplexy was the immediate cause of his demise.

Coordinator's note: Although his gravestone says he died in 1921, news of his death was published 1 year earlier in the newspaper. Also, his gravestone says "Isaac" whereas all other documentation says "Isaiah".

Isiah Nixon

Isiah Nixon was born in New Richmond county, Pennsylvania, November 16, 1842, and died at Hanley, Iowa, March 27, 1920. His mother died when he was three years old. He removed with his father to Ohio at an early age.

He enlisted in the 18th Ohio Volunteers for three months in 1861 and re-enlisted in Co. D, 2nd West Virginia Cavalry as Co. blacksmith for the rest of the war.; he was captured and confined in Andersonville prison for seven months.

In 1870 he moved to Labette county, Kansas, and homesteaded land. In May 1872, he was united in marriage to Sarah M. Miller; six children blessed this union. The family moved to Madison county, Iowa, in 1881, where they have since resided.

He early joined the church and was a member of the Hanley M. E. church at the time of his death. He was a member of the local G. A. R. and of the 1842 club.

He was the last survivor of a family of eight children and leaves to mourn his loss, a widow and four sons – J. H. and A. E., of Minnesota, and O. M. and F. A., of Hanley, the oldest and youngest having preceded him to the grave, also a host of friends and neighbors. He was a kind father and loving husband and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
