Hope was alone in the car, and was driving south on South First street. When he got to the Summit street intersection, the vehicle continued about straight south into the Highway commission storage area there, and plunged against the storage pile of crushed rock.

The car was demolished and Hope was pinned inside the wreckage. After being freed from the wreckage, he was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he died at 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

Hope was a life-long resident of Winterset, and had operated a shoe and canvas repair store here in recent years. He also served as night police radio operator at City hall.

He was a veteran of four years of service in the U.S. armed forces during which time he served overseas in Korea.

Lawrence C. Hope was born in Madison county, June 23, 1938, a son of Ralph W. and Gwendolyn DeLong Hope. He was married June 8, 1955, to Sharon Johnson, who survives him.

He also leaves two children, Teresa Del Hope, aged 1-, and Jeffrey L. Hope, aged 5, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hope of Winterset; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence DeLong and Mrs. Claude Hope, all of Winterset. He also leaves a brother, Larry E. Hope, of Winterset; and a sister, Sharon K. Hope of Denver, Colo.
